Excerpt

Dinner passed in the weird vortex of time where it dragged out forever. Then she was done eating, and it seemed like she’d just started. Liv and Jory asked what she had planned for the evening; it was Jory’s turn in the rotation, after all. Shaking her head at him, she mumbled that she was going to movie night.

“Really?” Liv asked. “Haven’t you seen it a bunch of times?”

In truth, Cara hadn’t even checked what was playing. She shrugged. “You two go have a night alone. Seriously. I don’t need a babysitter to distract me from Wes. I’m over it.”

Jory leveled a look at her.

“Fine, I’m not. But I’m going to watch a movie. So go have fun.”

They tugged on jackets against the rain—smart—and left her alone at the table. She was watching them drop off their trays and walk away with their hands laced together when her phone buzzed.

   Saved you a seat.

She hadn’t spotted Rhys anywhere and wasn’t sure what to do, or how any of this would work. But she was supposed to trust him.

   Still coming?

Steady breaths pushed down her nerves as her feet climbed the spiral staircase. She could always decide to leave. She didn’t have to go sit with him if he was crazy enough to think this was a good idea. Her feet kept climbing.
